What Is "Ductless"? Or Mini Split?
"Ductless" is a type of "Mini-Split"...So what's a mini-split?...A mini-split, as the name implies is a miniature version of a "split system". A split system being a centrally located whole home HVAC system that has both and indoor and outdoor unit. Meaning both hating and air conditioning. Typically a gas furnace and an air conditioner, or a air handler and a heat pump.
A mini-split is a smaller version of this set up. However mini-splits only come as heat pumps. There are no gas burning options. Mini-splits come in 3 types: Ductless, Ducted, and Multi-split.
A ductless mini split, again as the name implies; has no ducting. The indoor unit is either mounted high up on the wall or recessed in the ceiling (cassette) blowing air directly into the room it is installed in. These options are less invasive and fit in many space-constrained areas, often places difficult to run ducting to.
A ducted mini split, supplies air to rooms via ducting. these types of mini splits are not installed directly in the room they serve but rather in a centralized location such as an attic or crawl space. These are very much like a traditional heat pump split system but much smaller and capable of being installed in space-constrained areas, yet still require enough space for ducting to be run to the rooms it serves. Like an attic that is too small to accommodate a traditional central system.
A multi-split is a mini split system that can have more than one indoor unit connected to a single outdoor unit, sometimes up to 8 different indoor units. These configurations can accommodate a combination of different indoor unit types as well.
