Are Heat Pumps Right For San Diego?

Heat Pumps are an excellent choice for San Diego County!
Many households want them in their new home or ADU builds, or are using them to replace their existing gas furnaces.

Do They Work Well?

The answer is yes they do work well, especially in Southern California. Our climate zone is optimal for heat pumps because of our mild winters. The best outdoor temperature range for a heat pump's performance is between 25°F and 30°F (-4°C and -1°C), as this is where they operate most efficiently by pulling heat from the outside air. Above this range, they are highly efficient, and in colder temperatures below this point, efficiency drops, potentially requiring a supplemental heat source.

Are They Efficient?

The answer is yes, they are very efficient! However this high efficiency does not always translate to lower monthly energy costs. This is because though they do not use gas, they do use more electricity than a gas furnace. Heat pump efficiency is a measure of how much heating they produce vs how much energy they consume. In this regard modern heat pumps are more efficient than a gas furnace at temperatures above 30°F. Which in San Diego County is most places, most of the time.

Do They Reduce Energy Costs?

How did you hear about us
What can we help you with?

It depends...where the confusion occurs is in the assumption that their higher efficiency means lower monthly energy costs. Though this is a reasonable assumption to make, it is not always the case. This is because in San Diego County electricity is significantly more expensive than natural gas. So even though heat pumps are more efficient than a gas furnace and do not use gas, they do use more electricity.

So Where Do The Savings Come From?

Solar is the missing piece of the (lower monthly energy cost) equation. If you have solar, getting a heat pump is a no brainer. If you don't have solar a heat pump can still be a good option for you, such as if you are planning to get solar in the future, or you do not like to use gas. Of course some existing buildings, and new building requirements are all electric. Which makes a heat pump your only option. In any case it is important to be informed so you can make the best decision for yourself. If you still have questions or would like to explore a heat pump for your project just give us a call.
